Moroccans abroad sent 122 billion dirhams in 2025, up 2.6% from 2024. Bank Al-Maghrib forecasts 128 billion in 2026. Here is what these numbers mean for the diaspora and for Morocco.
Key Figures
According to the Office des Changes, MRE transfers have followed an upward trajectory:
- •2023: 115.26 billion DH
- •2024: 117.7 billion DH (+2.1%)
- •2025: 122 billion DH (+2.6%)
- •2026 (BAM forecast): 128 billion DH (+3 to 3.5%)
By end of February 2026, transfers already reached 18.54 billion DH, up 4.2% year-on-year.
Where Does the Money Go?
MRE transfers represent nearly 8.5% of Moroccan GDP and are the country's top source of foreign currency.
- •71% goes to household consumption
- •21% deposited in financial institutions
- •8% invested, of which over 80% in real estate
What Is Changing in 2026
The Fondation Mohammedia, announced by the King in November 2024, will coordinate a national diaspora strategy including investment support. Regional Investment Centers are increasingly accessible online. The new Investment Charter offers enhanced incentives for MRE-led projects.
