Medical coverage is a crucial issue for MRE, whether during a temporary stay or permanent return. Morocco has considerably expanded its health coverage with the generalisation of AMO. Here's how to navigate the available options.
Understanding the Moroccan health system
Morocco has a dual system: public sector (CHU hospitals, health centres) and private sector (clinics, surgeries). Private sector quality is generally superior but more expensive. Major cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech) offer healthcare quality comparable to Europe for certain specialities. Dental care and ophthalmology are significantly cheaper than in Europe.
๐ก Tip โ For routine care during a stay, private clinics offer excellent value for money. GP consultation: 150 to 300 DH.
AMO for returning MRE
If you return permanently to Morocco and work as an employee, you are automatically covered by AMO through CNSS. If you are self-employed or without activity, you can join the AMO for non-salaried workers (TNS) or AMO Tadamon (for those on lower incomes). The AMO TNS contribution is 6.37% of the notional income.
๐ก Tip โ Register with CNSS as soon as you return. The waiting period is 54 days of contributions before being covered.
Private insurance for MRE on temporary stays
For MRE on temporary stays, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does NOT work in Morocco. Options: international travel insurance (Chapka, ACS, Mondial Assistance), expat insurance (for long stays), or local Moroccan insurance (Saham, Wafa Assurance, AXA Maroc). Budget: 500 to 3000 DH/month depending on coverage.
๐ก Tip โ Take out travel insurance before departure. Emergency hospitalisations in Morocco can cost 5000 to 50 000 DH.
โ ๏ธ Warning โ The EHIC does NOT cover Morocco. Never travel without insurance.
Medical repatriation
In case of serious illness or accident, repatriation to Europe can cost 15 000 to 50 000 EUR. Check that your insurance includes medical repatriation. Premium bank cards (Visa Premier, Mastercard Gold) often include repatriation insurance for the first 90 days of travel.
๐ก Tip โ Check the limits and exclusions of your bank card insurance. They are often insufficient for long stays.
Specific care and medical tourism
Morocco is developing a medical tourism sector (dental, ophthalmology, cosmetic surgery). Prices are 50 to 70% lower than Europe for comparable quality in accredited clinics. MRE often combine their stay with planned treatments: dental implants, laser eye surgery, complete check-ups.
๐ก Tip โ Choose a clinic accredited by the Ministry of Health and request practitioners' certifications.
โ Common mistakes to avoid
- โTravelling to Morocco without insurance thinking the EHIC works
- โNot registering with CNSS after a permanent return
- โChoosing a non-accredited clinic for important treatments
