Operation Marhaba 2026 started on June 5. At sea, GNV launches two new LNG ferries (Aurora and Virgo), Baleària announces up to 37 daily crossings and AML deploys the AF Claudia. In the air, Ryanair opens a Rabat base with 20 routes and easyJet its first African base in Marrakech. Here is what is confirmed for your trip home this summer.

In short

Operation Marhaba 2026 started on June 5 and runs until September 15. Led by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, it supports the summer homecoming of Moroccans living abroad. This year, transport to Morocco is clearly being reinforced, both at sea and in the air. Key facts up front:

  • GNV launches two new LNG-powered ferries: the GNV Aurora (since June 1) and the GNV Virgo (from July 1).
  • Baleària announces an unprecedented summer plan: up to 37 daily crossings to Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla, plus a new fast line Tarifa - Tangier City.
  • AML (Africa Morocco Link) deploys the new AF Claudia ferry on Algeciras - Tanger Med, with reinforced vehicle capacity for peak periods.
  • Sète remains the only direct gateway between France and Morocco, operated by GNV to Tanger Med and Nador.
  • In the air, Ryanair opens a base in Rabat with 20 routes, and easyJet its first African base in Marrakech. Frequencies also rise at Transavia, Vueling and Air France.
  • The number one tip is the same every year: book early. Seats and prices tighten fast as July and August approach.

At sea: the 2026 ferry reinforcements

Crossing the strait remains the classic homecoming, especially for families traveling with their car. This summer, several companies are adding capacity.

GNV brings two brand-new ferries to Morocco

Italian company GNV christened the GNV Aurora in Tangier on June 2. It is a new-generation, LNG-powered vessel that can carry about 1,700 passengers in 426 cabins. It serves the Genoa - Tanger Med line, with a stop in Barcelona. A sister ship, the GNV Virgo, enters service from July 1.

Beyond these Italian additions, GNV remains the reference for MRE in France thanks to its Sète - Tanger Med and Sète - Nador lines, with car deck and family cabins.

Baleària steps up

Spanish company Baleària announces an unprecedented plan for summer 2026: twelve vessels and up to 37 daily crossings to Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla. Across the season, that is about 200 weekly connections between June 15 and September 15, spread over Tanger Med, Nador, Ceuta and Melilla. Baleària also launches a new fast line Tarifa - Tangier City, timed with the start of Marhaba.

AML and the AF Claudia for vehicles

Africa Morocco Link, the Moroccan operator, reinforces its presence with the AF Claudia ferry on the Algeciras - Tanger Med line. Its large garage capacity (around 2,100 linear meters, meaning dozens of extra cars per rotation) targets exactly the high-pressure periods when MRE families return with a loaded vehicle.

In the air: the 2026 flight news

For MRE who travel light or live far from a port, flying is often simplest. The big trend of summer 2026 is the strong arrival of low-cost carriers on Morocco.

Ryanair opens a base in Rabat

Ryanair opened a new base in Rabat in spring 2026, with 20 routes from the capital. Seven brand-new international links are announced, including Milan Bergamo, Porto, Pisa, Valencia and several German cities. The airline targets more than 10 million passengers on Morocco for the summer. It already runs bases in Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir, Fès and Essaouira, multiplying entry points for MRE.

easyJet settles in Marrakech

easyJet opened its first African base in Marrakech, with three Airbus A320 stationed there from summer 2026. The airline adds new links to France and Europe, for example Lille, Strasbourg and Hamburg to Marrakech.

And the other carriers

Transavia, Vueling, Air France, British Airways and Air Arabia Maroc also boost frequencies and open seasonal routes. As the national carrier, Royal Air Maroc offers special MRE summer fares. It also set up a separate program for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, which we cover in a dedicated article.

Ferry or flight: how to choose

There is no universal answer, it depends on your situation.

  • You return with a loaded car: the ferry is almost unavoidable. Aim for Tanger Med (from Algeciras, Tarifa or Sète) or Nador (from Almería or Sète).
  • You travel light, small family: a low-cost flight is often cheaper and much faster, especially with the new Rabat and Marrakech bases.
  • You live in south-east France: consider Marseille - Tanger Med (La Méridionale) on top of Sète, which fills up fast.
  • You travel at peak (late July, August): book as early as possible. Prices climb sharply and popular crossings sell out quickly.

Practical tips for the crossing

  • Book early. It is the single move that saves the most money and stress. The best dates go from spring.
  • Prepare the vehicle paperwork if you take the boat with your car. Temporary admission to Morocco and border insurance are best arranged in advance.
  • Compare several ports. For the same destination, leaving from Almería instead of Algeciras, or aiming for Nador rather than Tanger Med, can change the price and the wait.
  • Keep useful contacts. The Mohammed V Foundation sets up reception points and assistance each summer at boarding ports and in Morocco.
  • Beware shady resales of tickets and fake booking pages. Use the carriers' official websites.

Frequently asked questions

When does Operation Marhaba 2026 start?

Operation Marhaba 2026 started on June 5 and runs until September 15. It is led by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, which sets up reception points and assistance at ports and in Morocco.

What are the new ferries to Morocco in 2026?

GNV launches two new LNG-powered ships: the GNV Aurora (since June 1, on Genoa - Tanger Med via Barcelona) and the GNV Virgo (from July 1). AML deploys the AF Claudia ferry on Algeciras - Tanger Med, with reinforced vehicle capacity.

How do I return to Morocco from France by ferry?

The only direct maritime line between France and Morocco leaves from Sète, operated by GNV to Tanger Med and Nador. From the south-east, Marseille - Tanger Med (La Méridionale) is a seasonal alternative. Many MRE in France also go through Spain (Algeciras, Tarifa, Almería) for shorter, more frequent crossings.

Are there new air routes to Morocco in 2026?

Yes. Ryanair opened a base in Rabat with 20 routes, including several new European cities. easyJet opened its first African base in Marrakech with three based aircraft. Transavia, Vueling, Air France and Air Arabia Maroc also increase frequencies.

Ferry or flight, which is cheaper?

It depends on your profile. If you travel with your car, the ferry remains the logical choice despite the price. If you travel light, a low-cost flight is often cheaper and faster, especially when booked early and outside the late-July and August peaks.

When should I book for this summer?

As early as possible. The best dates and prices, ferry or flight, go from spring. As July and August approach, popular crossings sell out and fares climb fast.

Can I take my car on the ferry?

Yes, it is the main reason many MRE choose the boat. Arrange the vehicle steps in advance, in particular temporary admission to Morocco and insurance, and pick a company with good garage capacity at peak.
