Meta plans to raise $35 billion to fund its AI race
According to documents filed with the SEC, Meta plans to raise $35 billion through a share issue, its first since its 2012 IPO. A further share issuance programme of up to $60 billion is also under consideration, with no date set.
Meta Prepares a $35 Billion Share Issue to Fuel Its AI Race
Meta is looking to raise $35 billion through a share issue. The information comes from documents filed with the SEC, the US financial markets regulator. The California-based group had never done this since its stock market flotation in May 2012.
That is not all. Meta is also considering an additional share issuance programme worth up to $60 billion. No implementation date has been specified for this second operation. According to one of the filed documents, Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom have expressed interest in part of the new shares, up to $5 billion in total.
The scale of these sums is explained by the planned spending. Meta has said it intends to mobilise "hundreds of billions of dollars" over several years for its artificial intelligence capabilities. For 2026, the group expects capital expenditure of between $135 and $145 billion, mainly to build and develop data centres. These infrastructures are essential for training and running AI models. When presenting its results, Meta had indicated that it wanted to begin raising these funds as early as the autumn.
The way it is financed is also changing. Until now, the major technology companies, including Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon, have mostly funded their AI investments from their cash reserves. Rising spending is pushing some of them to seek external financing. Meta has already raised several tens of billions of dollars on the bond markets and now intends to supplement its resources with share issues, as competition for ever more powerful AI infrastructure and technologies intensifies.
