Any vehicle registered abroad entering Morocco must be covered by insurance valid on Moroccan territory. Insurance taken out in Europe (green card) is generally not accepted in Morocco or only covers minimum RC. Border insurance, sold at border crossings and some Moroccan consulates, fills this gap for periods of 8 to 90 days depending on the MRE's needs.

Understanding mandatory border insurance

Border insurance (assurance au tiers frontière) is mandatory civil liability insurance covering damage caused to third parties while driving in Morocco. It is sold directly at border crossings (Tanger Med, Bab Sebta, Bab Melilla) or at some Moroccan consulates in Europe. Minimum duration is 8 days, maximum 3 months (90 days).

💡 Tip — If you stay in Morocco for more than 3 months with your foreign vehicle, you must regularize your customs situation before that deadline or risk vehicle seizure.

2

Rates by length of stay

Border insurance rates vary by vehicle category and chosen duration. For a standard passenger car, expect 300 DH for 8 days, 450 DH for 15 days, 600 DH for 1 month and 800 DH for 3 months for minimum RC coverage. Comprehensive coverage is generally not available at the border; you must contact an approved insurer after entering Morocco.

💡 Tip — For a standard summer stay of 3 to 4 weeks, the 1-month policy at 600 DH is the best value. Keep the original certificate in the vehicle at all times.

⚠️ Warning — Fines for lack of insurance in Morocco start at 500 DH and can result in vehicle immobilization.

3

Approved insurance companies in Morocco

For more complete coverage (comprehensive, assistance, legal protection), the main approved Moroccan companies are: Wafa Assurance (Attijariwafa Bank group), RMA Watanya, BMCE Assurance, Saham Assurance and Axa Maroc. They can issue a policy for a foreign vehicle on temporary stay. Have a copy of your registration, passport and European residence permit ready.

💡 Tip — Wafa Assurance and RMA have branches in major coastal cities frequented by MRE (Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech, Tanger). Some branches are accustomed to MRE files and process them quickly.

4

Special cases: vehicle bought in Europe and driven to Morocco

If you buy a new or used vehicle in Europe to import to Morocco, the vehicle has a temporary export registration (WW plates in France, red plates in Belgium). In this case, transit insurance must cover the journey to Morocco AND the customs clearance period. After customs clearance and Moroccan registration, you will take out standard Moroccan insurance.

⚠️ Warning — A vehicle with export plates not insured for Morocco may be refused boarding by ferry companies.

In depth

The insurance question becomes complex for MRE who make several round trips per year. In this case, some Moroccan companies offer annual contracts for foreign vehicles on repeated stays, more economical than multiple border insurances. You need proof of European residence, registration and an information statement from the European insurer. A frequently overlooked point: if you have an accident with your foreign vehicle in Morocco and are only covered for RC, the Bureau Central Marocain (BCM) may intervene to compensate the victim but will come after you to recover amounts advanced. For a summer stay with family and long journey, taking out comprehensive coverage with an approved Moroccan insurer (1500 to 3000 DH extra depending on vehicle value) is serious protection worth considering.

❌ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Believing the European green card is enough in Morocco - it is not recognized or insufficient
  • Forgetting to renew border insurance before it expires during a long stay
  • Not keeping the insurance certificate in the vehicle during gendarmerie checks

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is border insurance mandatory to enter Morocco with a foreign vehicle?

Yes, border insurance is mandatory for any foreign-registered vehicle driving in Morocco. It can be purchased directly at the entry port or from approved insurance company offices (Wafa Assurance, RMA, BMCE Assurance). Without it, your vehicle may be impounded.

What is the price of border insurance in Morocco in 2026?

Border insurance costs between 300 and 800 DH depending on the chosen duration and vehicle power. One-month coverage costs around 300 to 400 DH, while three-month coverage (the maximum) can reach 700 to 800 DH. Rates are regulated by the state.

What is the maximum duration of border insurance for an MRE?

The maximum duration of border insurance is 3 months. This period also corresponds to the legal stay of a foreign vehicle in Morocco. If you extend your stay, you must either renew your border insurance or register the vehicle in Morocco.

What is the difference between minimum liability and comprehensive insurance in Morocco?

Minimum liability (RC) covers only damages caused to third parties; it is mandatory and included in border insurance. Comprehensive insurance also covers damage to your own vehicle (collision, theft, fire). For a recent vehicle, comprehensive coverage is recommended.

Can you buy border insurance before arriving at the port?

Yes, some companies like Wafa Assurance and RMA Watanya allow you to subscribe online before departure. You can also buy it at the counters at Tanger Med or Nador port right after leaving the ferry. Allow 15 to 30 minutes on-site during peak season for the paperwork.

Is my European green card valid in Morocco?

The European green card is valid in Morocco if your country explicitly includes it. Check that Morocco (MA) is ticked on your European insurance certificate. Even if it is valid, Moroccan border insurance may be required at some border posts. Check with your insurer before you leave.

Which Moroccan companies offer border insurance in summer 2026?

The main companies offering border insurance in Morocco are Wafa Assurance, RMA Watanya, BMCE Assurance and Saham Assurance. They have counters at the ports of Tanger Med, Tanger ville, Nador and Al Hoceima during the summer season. Compare prices: differences can reach 150 DH for the same duration.
