Moroccan consular services issue several family status certificates to Moroccans living abroad: single status, marriage, divorce and non-remarriage, as well as a custom certificate, an individual civil status sheet and a life certificate. Consular registration is asked for every time. Information checked on 21 October 2026 on consulat.ma.

Be registered and identify the right document
Among the documents consulat.ma lists for these certificates, consular registration appears every time. If you are not yet in the consulate's register, registration therefore comes before any request. Then note the exact document the receiving body asks for: single status, marriage, divorce or non-remarriage certificate, custom certificate, administrative certificate for marriage, civil status sheet or life certificate. Each has its own list of documents, described in the following steps. The consulat.ma pages give no fee or processing time for these documents.
💡 Tip: Registration: /en/guides/moroccan-consular-registry-registration.
Single status certificate
It proves single status and is issued for administrative purposes by the consular services of the place of residence. The documents are consular registration, the national identity card and its photocopy, and the full copy of the birth certificate. The page names the national identity card as the identity document and does not mention the passport. When the consulate cannot determine the applicant's family situation, it also asks for a handwritten, legalised sworn statement and the legalised statement of two Moroccan witnesses registered at the consulate.
⚠️ Warning: If the consulate cannot establish the family situation, two registered Moroccan witnesses and a legalised handwritten statement are required.
Marriage and divorce certificates
Both certificates rest on the corresponding record. For the marriage certificate, bring consular registration, the marriage record in original and photocopy, and the passport or CNIE. For the divorce certificate, bring consular registration, the divorce record in original and photocopy, and the passport or CNIE. For legalisation or apostille of documents, see the LesMRE guide on legalisation. Consulat.ma specifies no other document for these two certificates.
💡 Tip: Legalisation and apostille: /en/guides/legalize-apostille-moroccan-documents-abroad.
Non-remarriage certificate
The file is more substantial. It includes consular registration; the divorce record, the judgment or the spouse's death certificate, in original and photocopy; the full copy of the birth certificate, less than three months old; the passport or CNIE; a legalised sworn statement; and the legalised statement of two Moroccan witnesses, preferably registered at the consulate. Consulat.ma lists no other document for this certificate.
⚠️ Warning: The full copy of the birth certificate must be less than three months old.
Custom certificate and administrative certificate for marriage
The custom certificate is an attestation by the consular services recalling the provisions of the Moroccan Family Code on marriage. It asks for consular registration, the CNIE or passport (original and copy) and proof of marital status (engagement, marriage, non-remarriage, divorce or the spouse's death). The administrative certificate for marriage, for a single, married, divorced or widowed person, also requires a full birth copy less than six months old, a legalised sworn statement on family status, the legalised statement of two male Moroccan witnesses, and the divorce record (final judgment) or death record as relevant.

Individual civil status sheet
Consular services issue it to anyone living somewhere other than their place of birth. It is valid for three months from issue. The documents are consular registration; the family booklet, or the old identity and civil status booklet, or the old extract, or the old full copy; and the CNIE or an identity document. It carries the same evidential weight as the birth certificate extract, except to establish Moroccan nationality, to establish the CNIE, and to establish civil status facts before the courts.
⚠️ Warning: It does not replace the birth certificate extract to establish Moroccan nationality, the CNIE or civil status facts before the courts.
Life certificate
Consulat.ma groups the individual or collective life certificate and the family civil status sheet on one page. The documents are consular registration, the family booklet and an identity document, and the applicant must attend in person. For fees, the page refers to the list of applicable tariffs and notes: "Gratuité pour pensionnés" (free for pensioners). No amount can be read on the page itself. The certificate can be individual or collective; the page pairs it with the family civil status sheet, one of the civil status services consulates provide.
💡 Tip: The applicant must be present at the consulate.
In depth
Consular civil status certificates meet distinct needs but rest on the same basics: consular registration, a Moroccan identity document and civil status records. The single status certificate is obtained with the full copy of the birth certificate; only when the consulate cannot determine the family situation does it ask for a handwritten, legalised statement and that of two registered Moroccan witnesses. For a marriage or a divorce, the certificate simply reflects the record presented, in original and photocopy.
The non-remarriage certificate and the administrative certificate for marriage are the two heaviest files. The first combines a divorce record, a judgment or a death certificate, a full birth copy less than three months old, a legalised statement and two witnesses. The second varies with the situation (single, married, divorced or widowed) and adds the corresponding records. The custom certificate recalls the Family Code rules on marriage and relies on proof of marital status.
The individual civil status sheet is designed for people living away from their place of birth. It has the value of a birth certificate extract for three months, but not to establish Moroccan nationality, the CNIE or civil status facts before the courts: in those cases the extract itself remains necessary. The life certificate, finally, requires the applicant's presence, with the family booklet and an identity document. Birth records can be obtained in Morocco or at the consulate; people born in Morocco can also use www.watiqa.ma.
