Every summer, over 4 million MREs take ferries between Europe and Morocco as part of Operation Marhaba. Summer 2026 is set to be particularly busy with new routes and the launch of EES at Schengen borders. This guide covers all available routes, compares companies, explains the compulsory closed-ticket rule in August, and provides practical tips for a smooth crossing.

Choose your ferry route based on your departure point

From Spain: (1) Algeciras-Tanger Med (1h30): the busiest route, ideal with a vehicle. Companies: Trasmediterranea, FRS, Balearia, Naviera Armas. Up to 20 sailings daily in summer. (2) Tarifa-Tanger Ville (35 to 60 min): the shortest crossing, passengers only (no vehicles). FRS only. (3) Almeria-Nador (8h): new GNV route launched in 2026, ideal for MREs travelling to the Nador region. From France: (4) Sète-Tanger Med (34 to 42h): GNV and Balearia, with cabins and restaurant. 2 to 3 departures per week. (5) Marseille-Tanger Med (43h): La Méridionale, less frequent.

💡 Tip — For MREs based in France, the Sète-Tanger Med or Marseille route avoids transit through Spain and can be more economical when nights on board are included.

⚠️ Warning — Tanger Ville (city centre port) and Tanger Med (port 40 km to the east) are two different ports. Check your final destination before booking.

2

Book your ticket in advance

Advance booking is essential in summer. July and August tickets sell out as early as March-April. Compare prices on the companies' own websites or via specialist comparison sites bladia.com and smartferry.com. Book both outward and return tickets at the same time. In summer, prices rise sharply as the date approaches: a ticket booked in March can cost 2 to 3 times less than a last-minute one.

💡 Tip — Promotional or 'promo advance' tickets are limited in number. Set up price alerts on comparison sites to grab deals as soon as they open.

⚠️ Warning — Never buy tickets from unofficial resellers or WhatsApp/Facebook groups. Fake ticket scams circulate every summer. Only buy from official company websites or via bladia.com or smartferry.com.

3

Understanding the closed-ticket rule in August

In August (generally August 1 to 31, dates adjusted annually), Moroccan and Spanish authorities enforce the 'closed ticket' (billet fermé) rule: every ferry passenger must hold a return ticket with a fixed return date. Single tickets or open-return tickets are not permitted during this period. This rule applies to all passengers regardless of nationality.

💡 Tip — If your return date is uncertain, choose the latest possible date and change it later through the company (modification fees vary).

⚠️ Warning — A one-way ticket without a return date will be refused at boarding in August. You will have to buy one on the spot, usually at a high price. Plan your return in advance.

4

Preparing to board with your vehicle

Arrive at the port at least 2 hours before departure (3 hours in summer). You will need: vehicle registration document, identity card or passport, driving licence, valid insurance (European insurance covers Morocco if you are in the Green Card/IMIC zone). On board: heavy goods vehicles board first, then caravans and campervans, then private cars. Car spaces are assigned at boarding.

💡 Tip — Keep all your documents in an accessible folder. Spanish and Moroccan customs control takes place on the quay before boarding, not on board.

⚠️ Warning — In summer 2026, EES is active at Spanish ports. Allow an extra 30 to 60 minutes for biometric control if you do not hold a residence permit (see our EES guide).

5

Making use of Operation Marhaba services

The Fondation Mohammed V Operation Marhaba runs from June 5 to September 15, 2026. Marhaba agents are present in ports and at main road border crossings to assist you. Services available: administrative assistance, first medical aid, reception for people with reduced mobility, information point. In case of difficulty, the Marhaba hotline is reachable from Morocco on 080 000 23 23 (free call).

💡 Tip — Marhaba stands are located at port entrances and in waiting areas. Locate them as soon as you arrive.

⚠️ Warning — In case of a medical emergency on board, notify the crew immediately. Every ferry has a medical room and can contact sea rescue services.

In depth

## Detailed company and route comparison **Algeciras-Tanger Med (main route):** - Trasmediterranea: historic company, modern fleet, stable prices, Club Meridional loyalty programme - FRS: competitive prices, simple online booking - Balearia: modern fleet, loyalty programme, good frequency - Naviera Armas: present on certain sailings **Tarifa-Tanger Ville:** - FRS only: fast passenger service (35-60 min), no vehicles, ideal for quick round trips **Almeria-Nador (new GNV route 2026):** - GNV: launched in 2026 to relieve pressure on Algeciras, particularly useful for MREs living in southern Spain or Catalonia. 7 to 8-hour crossing with cabins available. **Sète-Tanger Med (from France):** - GNV: 2 to 3 departures per week, 34h crossing, interior and exterior cabins, restaurant, lounge, children's area - Balearia: some sailings, often competitive prices **Marseille-Tanger Med:** - La Méridionale: less frequent (around 1 departure per week), 43h crossing, cabins and restaurant. Option for MREs living in eastern France. **Closed-ticket rule — legal detail:** Established by agreement between Moroccan and Spanish authorities to manage peak traffic. In practice, companies refuse boarding to anyone who cannot present a return ticket with a fixed date during the affected period. The return date can be changed after purchase (variable fees) but having a dated return ticket is mandatory. **Pets:** Dogs and cats can travel on board under certain conditions: European pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination (less than 12 months old, administered more than 21 days before travel), health record. They must remain in a cage or vehicle during the crossing on most routes. Check each company's specific conditions before booking.

❌ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing Tanger Med port (40 km east of Tanger) with Tanger Ville port: two different destinations with separate road access
  • Travelling with a one-way ticket in August without knowing the closed-ticket rule and being refused boarding
  • Buying tickets from unofficial resellers (fake tickets) on social media
  • Not allowing enough extra time for EES biometric control in summer 2026
  • Forgetting the international vehicle insurance (Green Card/IMIC) required to drive in Morocco
