The annual special tax on motor vehicles (TSA), commonly called vignette, is owed by every owner of a vehicle registered in Morocco. For MRE who own a vehicle in Morocco, this tax must be paid each year between January 1 and March 31. Since 2020, the General Tax Directorate (DGI) allows online payment via the Simpl-Vignette portal, greatly facilitating the process from abroad.

2026 TSA rates by vehicle category

The 2026 TSA rates are set by fiscal power category (horsepower). For passenger cars: less than 8 HP = 350 DH, 8 to 10 HP = 600 DH, 11 to 14 HP = 1000 DH, 15 HP and above = 1700 DH. Commercial vehicles and vans follow a specific grid based on GVW. Motorcycles over 125cc are subject to a separate tax of 150 DH.

💡 Tip — Fiscal power (HP) appears on your Moroccan registration document on line 'P.6'. It directly determines your annual TSA amount.

2

Online payment via Simpl-Vignette (DGI)

The Simpl-Vignette portal (simpl.tax.gov.ma) allows paying the TSA from anywhere in the world. You need to create an account with the vehicle registration number and a Moroccan CIN or passport number. Payment is made by Visa/Mastercard bank card (Moroccan or foreign) or bank transfer. After payment, a downloadable tax receipt is issued immediately.

💡 Tip — Use up-to-date Firefox or Chrome to access Simpl. The portal can be slow in January-February. If payment fails with a foreign card, try with a Moroccan card (CIH, CMP, Attijariwafa).

⚠️ Warning — Online payment does not generate a physical sticker. Digital proof of payment is sufficient at road checks since 2022.

3

Deadlines and late payment penalties

The TSA is due between January 1 and March 31 each year. After March 31, a penalty of 100 DH per month of delay applies, capped at 400 DH (4 months). Beyond that, a 15% surcharge on the principal amount applies. Vignette checks are frequent at gendarmerie checkpoints, especially on main roads during summer.

💡 Tip — If you are not in Morocco between January and March, authorize a relative to make payment on your behalf via Simpl-Vignette with your credentials. A power of attorney is not required for this type of online payment.

4

Vehicles exempt from TSA

Exempt from TSA: vehicles belonging to the State and local authorities, diplomatic vehicles, new vehicles during their registration year (first year exemption), vehicles over 25 years old classified as vintage vehicles, and electric vehicles (full exemption until 2028 per the 2023 Finance Law).

💡 Tip — Hybrid vehicles are not exempt but benefit from a 50% reduced TSA rate since the 2022 Finance Law.

In depth

For MRE who own several vehicles in Morocco (personal use + vehicle left with family), TSA management can be done entirely from abroad via Simpl-Vignette. Each vehicle has its own file accessible with the registration number. It is advisable to group payments in January to avoid any oversight. An important subtlety: if you import a vehicle from Europe and it is registered in Morocco during the year (for example in June), you are exempt from TSA for the first full calendar year. The TSA will be due from January 1 of the following year. This exemption does not apply to vehicles transferred from a previous registration.

❌ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to pay before March 31 and having to pay penalties on summer return
  • Confusing actual engine power (kW) with fiscal power (HP) to calculate the correct rate
  • Believing a physical sticker is still required when digital payment has been sufficient since 2022

❓ Frequently asked questions

What are the motor vehicle tax (vignette) rates in Morocco for 2026?

TSA 2026 rates vary by engine size: around 350 DH for vehicles up to 8 CV, 650 DH from 9 to 10 CV, 1 050 DH from 11 to 14 CV, and 1 700 DH above 14 CV. These amounts are set by the General Tax Directorate and revised each year in the Finance Act.

How do you pay the vehicle tax online in Morocco?

The vignette can be paid online via the DGI Simpl-Vignette portal, accessible at simpl.tax.gov.ma. You identify yourself with your registration number and national ID card. Payment is made by bank card (Visa/Mastercard) or CMI. An electronic receipt is sent by email after confirmation.

What is the deadline to pay the vignette without penalty?

The vignette must be paid between January 1 and March 31 each year. After March 31, a penalty of 100 DH per month of delay applies. A vehicle checked without a valid vignette during the year may also be subject to a fine.

Which vehicles are exempt from the vignette in Morocco?

Vehicles with fewer than 8 fiscal CV registered before a certain date and electric vehicles benefit from full or partial exemptions. Vehicles belonging to the State, embassies and disabled persons are also exempt. Check your situation on the Simpl-Vignette portal before paying.

Does an MRE with a French car need to pay the Moroccan vignette?

No, the Moroccan motor vehicle tax (TSA) only applies to vehicles registered in Morocco. If you enter Morocco with a French or European car on foreign plates, you are not subject to TSA. However, if you have cleared customs and obtained Moroccan registration, the vignette is mandatory.

Can the vignette be paid in cash or only by card?

Online payment via Simpl-Vignette only accepts bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) and the CMI network. It is also possible to pay in cash at the Treasury General of the Kingdom (TGR) offices in prefectures and municipalities. Online payment is however faster and available 24/7.

What happens if I have not paid the vignette for several years?

Penalties accumulate at 100 DH per month of delay. To regularize a situation spanning several years, you must pay the principal amount plus all accumulated penalties. Regularization can be done online or at a TGR office. There is currently no tax amnesty on vignette arrears.
