GNV Opens New Almeria-Nador Ferry Route for MREs in Spain in 2026
Shipping company GNV launches in 2026 a direct service between Almeria and Nador, offering an alternative to the congested Algeciras-Tanger Med route for MREs living in southern Spain and Catalonia.
A new option for MREs in Spain
Italian-Spanish shipping company GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) inaugurates in 2026 a direct ferry service between Almeria (Andalusia, Spain) and Nador (Oriental region, Morocco). This new route complements the existing network, previously dominated by the Algeciras-Tanger Med route.
Why this route matters
Almeria-Nador is a strategic alternative for several reasons:
- •MREs living in Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon and Murcia can now reach Morocco without driving all the way to Algeciras (3 to 4 extra hours from Barcelona or Valencia).
- •Nador is directly accessible, avoiding the journey from Tanger Med to the Oriental, Rif and inland regions (Oujda, Al Hoceima, Berkane).
- •The route relieves traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar, which is severely congested in July-August during Operation Marhaba.

How to book
Booking is available directly on gnv.it or via comparison sites bladia.com and smartferry.com. Tickets for summer 2026 have been available since March 2026.
Tips for this route:
- •Book early: this is a new route and capacity is more limited than Algeciras.
- •For travellers from Catalonia, the time+cost calculation favours this route over going via Algeciras (saving 200 km and 2+ hours on the Spanish road).
- •The night crossing (evening departure, morning arrival in Nador) is ideal: you sleep on board and arrive rested.
Context: GNV and its Morocco routes
GNV has been operating the Sète-Tanger Med route (from southern France, 34h crossing) for several years, very popular with MREs from France. The Almeria-Nador route is the group's second Moroccan service, confirming its development strategy in the MRE market.
For MREs travelling from France, the Sète-Tanger Med route remains the most direct. For those living in Spain (outside Andalusia), Almeria-Nador stands out as the new alternative to watch.
