Autonomous drone: a Moroccan-built prototype targets 2,000 km without GPS

Rabat may hold one of the most striking technology promises of the year. On 28 September 2026, the Moroccan company Ballistic Defense System (BDS) unveiled the first version of its autonomous drone prototype, together with a demonstration video. According to the company, field tests were successful, and the claimed range reaches 2,000 km.

A drone that flies without GPS

BDS is targeting the most debated weakness of modern guided systems: their dependence on satellite signals, which are routinely jammed or spoofed. The drone reads the terrain beneath it and compares it with a free worldwide elevation map, much like a pilot who recognises valleys and ridges. All processing runs onboard, on a computer "the size of a hand", using standard off-the-shelf sensors.

As it nears its objective, a second artificial intelligence agent searches for the target, then a third takes over for the final, high-precision phase.

Designed in Morocco, by Moroccans

The Rabat-based company is led by Fahd Laamoumi, a Belgian-Moroccan aerospace engineer trained at ISAE-SUPAERO. According to BDS, everything was designed, coded, built and tested in Morocco by Moroccan engineers, with no outsourcing: the know-how, the data and the intellectual property stay in Morocco.

The company puts forward two striking figures: a prototype developed in under 18 months, on a budget of less than $1.15 million.

Next step, flying in real conditions

These performance figures come from the company itself and still await independent validation. BDS has already set out what comes next: a demonstration in real conditions, a new generation of airframe and a growing team.

For the diaspora, Fahd Laamoumi's path also carries a message: talent trained abroad can build cutting-edge technology in Morocco.
