In August, Moroccan and Spanish authorities impose the closed ticket rule on all ferry routes between Spain and Morocco. A one-way ticket without a fixed return date = boarding refused. What you need to know.

What is the closed ticket rule?

Every year in August, Moroccan and Spanish authorities introduce the closed ticket rule on all ferry routes between Spain (Algeciras, Tarifa, Almeria) and Morocco (Tanger Med, Tanger Ville, Nador). This measure aims to regulate flows at the peak of Operation Marhaba.

The rule is simple: any passenger boarding a ferry must hold a return ticket with a fixed return date. One-way tickets and open tickets (without a return date) are refused at boarding throughout the affected period.

In 2026, the closed ticket period generally applies from August 1 to 31. The companies (Trasmediterranea, FRS, Balearia, GNV) communicate exact dates each year.

Why does this rule exist?

The Strait of Gibraltar is crossed by more than 400,000 vehicles in August, roughly 14,000 per day at peak times. Without the closed ticket rule, a significant proportion of travellers took one-way tickets without knowing their return date, creating massive congestion on Moroccan quays.

The rule forces travellers to plan their return in advance, allowing companies and ports to manage flows predictably.

What this concretely means for you

If you are planning a trip to Morocco with a return in August:

•You must have a dated return ticket before boarding, regardless of the company or route.
•A one-way ticket will be refused at boarding. You will have to buy a return ticket on the spot, often at a high price (more than 2x the normal rate at peak times).
•The return date can be changed after purchase with the company, subject to availability and modification fees (EUR 0 to 50 depending on the company).

What to do if your return is not yet fixed?

If your return date is uncertain, several strategies are available:

•Choose the latest possible return date when purchasing, then change it once your plans are confirmed. Modifications are generally possible online or by phone.
•Opt for a "flexible" fare if the company offers one. These tickets are more expensive but can be changed without fees.
•Avoid buying at the port on the day of departure: return tickets sold on site in August can cost 3 to 5 times more than an advance booking.

•Book your round-trip ticket now (July-August spaces sell out from March-April).

•If travelling with a vehicle, book both directions at the same time: car spaces sell out even faster than passenger places.
