Closed ticket on Spain-Morocco ferry crossings: what the official sources say
The closed ticket is a ferry ticket with a fixed departure date and time. The official sources we read describe neither a compulsory return ticket nor a rule limited to August. What they say.

What the closed ticket is
The closed ticket (called "billet ferme" on the Moroccan side) is a ferry ticket carrying a fixed departure date and time. It is not a return ticket: the official sources we read describe no obligation to hold a return ticket.
According to the Tanger Med Port Authority (MAP dispatch of 11 August 2026, relayed on the maroc.ma portal), this ticket is required to access the port during Operation Marhaba 2026. The stated aim is to regulate passenger flows and avoid overloading the fleet.
Where the arrangement applies
According to the same source, the system has been in force for five years at the ports of Tangier, Tarifa, Nador and Ceuta. This year it was extended to Tanger Med and Algeciras.
The source we read sets no period limited to the month of August. Nor does it give a separate start date for each port.
Confirming the departure time
Passengers must confirm the time of their crossing before going to the port. According to the Tanger Med Port Authority, this can be done:
- •at the Tanger Med rest areas, at the entrance to the Tangier-Ksar Sghir motorway;
- •through the shipping companies' apps, websites and customer service lines.
Passengers whose ticket is not confirmed can change the date and time of their booking with the companies, or go to the Tanger Med zone on the Kenitra-Tangier motorway, or to the Ain Chouka port zone near Ksar Sghir.
On the Spanish side
The Protección Civil page on the Operación Paso del Estrecho (OPE) states that OPE 2026 runs from 15 June to 15 September. It lists the closed ticket among its recommendations to travellers, particularly for the critical dates of the outbound and return phases.
The operation's review
In its review of 15 September 2026, the Fondation Mohammed V pour la Solidarité lists a "firm-ticket system" among the measures taken to better organise flows during the departure phase. On its presentation page it states that Operation Marhaba is activated every year from 5 June to 15 September. In 2026 its reception arrangements were deployed from 10 June to 15 September.
Changes, fees and fares
The conditions for changing or cancelling a ticket, any fees and the fares are a matter for each shipping company. LesMRE has read no official page setting amounts or time limits common to all companies, and therefore gives none.
