The Sète-Tanger Med ferry route is the flagship solution for MREs living in France. GNV and Balearia offer several weekly crossings in 34 to 42 hours, with cabins and restaurant. Everything you need to know for summer 2026.

Sète-Tanger Med: the direct route for MREs from France

For the 1.6 million MREs living in France, the Sète-Tanger Med ferry route is the alternative to the road journey via Spain. Instead of driving to Algeciras (8 to 12 hours from Paris, 4 to 6 hours from Lyon), you board at Sète (1 hour from Montpellier, 4 hours from Paris by TGV+bus) and arrive directly at Tanger Med after 34 to 42 hours crossing the Mediterranean.

Companies and frequencies

Two companies operate the route in 2026:

GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci): 2 to 3 departures per week from Sète. Modern fleet with interior and exterior cabins, restaurant, bar, lounge, children's area. Duration: 34 hours.

Balearia: 1 to 2 departures per week depending on the season. Often competitive prices on certain dates. Duration: 38 to 42 hours.

La Méridionale also operates from Marseille to Tanger Med (43 hours), less frequent but useful for MREs in PACA and Corsica.

What is included on board

On-board comfort is the main advantage of this route over the Strait of Gibraltar (1h30):

  • Cabins: from a 4-berth interior cabin (cheapest) to an exterior double cabin with a window
  • Restaurant: fixed-price buffet or à la carte
  • Bar and lounge: open 24 hours
  • Children's area on some GNV ships
  • Vehicle parking on the lower deck (cars, campervans, motorcycles)

Tips for summer 2026

  1. Book now: July and August departures are already partially full. Exterior cabins go first.
  2. Compare dates: a Tuesday or Wednesday departure is often 20% cheaper than a Friday departure.
  3. Calculate the overall balance: Sète-Tanger Med costs more than the Algeciras ferry alone (EUR 80 to 150 more), but you save 600 to 800 km of driving in Spain, 1 to 2 hotel nights, fuel and wear on your car.
  4. Prepare your cabin: bring your own pillows if you are sensitive, and earplugs if you are in a shared cabin.
  5. Plan for EES: on your return via Tanger Med, EES biometric controls apply. Allow an extra 30 to 60 minutes.
