Gold in Morocco: 20 to 30 dirham drop per gram expected
According to Hespress, Moroccan gold markets are expected to lose 20 to 30 dirhams per gram by midweek, following the international gold decline. Per 18K, Moroccan 18-carat gold has already dropped 17 dirhams per gram, to about 1,020.
Gold in Morocco: A Further Drop of 20 to 30 Dirhams per Gram Expected by Midweek
Local markets are expected to see a further fall of 20 to 30 dirhams per gram by midweek, according to calculations and data gathered by Hespress from industry professionals. The move is coming from abroad. Spot gold has fallen by 3.5% to $3,880.97 an ounce, its lowest level since October 2025. This fall follows heavy selling in technology stocks, against a backdrop of concerns over investment in artificial intelligence.
In Morocco, raw 18-carat gold stands at around 1,020 dirhams per gram, for reference only. That is 17 dirhams less, or 1.64%, than at Friday's close, according to the specialist platform 18K. This decline remains smaller than the international fall, which would theoretically amount to nearly 70 dirhams per gram.
The gap is explained by a distinction professionals make between two prices. The "screen price" reflects the quotations of international stock markets. The "physical" price is what is actually charged in Moroccan markets. Soufiane, a gold and jewellery professional in Rabat, attributes the initial local drop to the urgent wish of some holders to sell quickly to obtain cash, as soon as the first signs of decline appeared internationally. According to him, the real effects should emerge gradually over two to three days.
For traders, the bill can quickly add up. A drop of 20 dirhams per gram represents a direct loss of 20,000 dirhams for every kilogram of gold. The jewellery sector is also experiencing, according to Soufiane, a marked stagnation in Morocco.
Looking ahead, professionals agree that the market generally sees a limited seasonal recovery during the final week before the New Year.
