Practical Marhaba 2026 checklist: 10 common MRE mistakes (vehicle insurance, 180-day TA, cash, EES, fixed vs open ticket, banned food, medication checks). ADII, Office des Changes, EU Regulation sources.

Every summer, thousands of MRE waste time at borders or pay fines for avoidable mistakes. Here are the 10 most common pitfalls identified from ADII notes, EU regulations and consular field feedback, with the official solution for each.

1. Traveling with a passport or CNIE valid for less than 6 months

Mistake: presenting a passport that expires in 4-5 months. Consequence: refusal to board by some carriers, or refusal of entry into Schengen on the EU side. Solution: passport or CNIE valid for at least 6 months after the planned return date. Consular renewal = 4-8 weeks outside high season.

2. Forgetting international vehicle insurance

Mistake: assuming that European insurance automatically covers Morocco. Consequence: minimum fine of 1,500 MAD at the border + obligation to subscribe on the spot. Official solution: before departure, ask your insurer for the green card with "Morocco" mention OR subscribe to border insurance (kiosks at Tangier Med / Nador entry ports, ~€30/month).

3. Miscalculating the customs allowance

Mistake: declaring a fully loaded car as "personal use". Official ADII rule: holiday allowance = 25,000 MAD/person for personal effects. Above this, customs clearance at standard rates (generally 17.5-40 %). Source: ADII Customs Code.

4. Exceeding the cash threshold without declaring

EU side (exit): declaration mandatory from €10,000 (Cerfa 13426*03 form or Spanish/Italian equivalent). Morocco side (entry): declaration mandatory from 100,000 MAD. Penalty: total confiscation possible + fine 25 % to 100 % of the amount. Source: Regulation (EU) 2018/1672 + Office des Changes Instruction 01/2018.

5. Confusing "open" and "closed" tickets

Mistake: taking a "closed" ticket (fixed return date) then wanting to extend for free. 2026 reality: only "open" tickets (modifiable return date) allow free changes subject to availability. "Closed" tickets are 30-50 % cheaper but changes cost €50-150. Tip: for a return between August 25 and September 5 (peak), take a flexible open ticket.

6. Not knowing the 90-day Schengen + EES rule

Mistake by MRE not holding an EU residence permit: thinking they can travel indefinitely. 2026 rule: 90 days out of 180 rolling days throughout the Schengen area. Since April 10, 2026, the EES (Entry/Exit System) automatically counts each entry/exit. Overstay = entry ban 1-5 years. Exemption: MRE holding an EU residence permit are exempt (Art. 2(3) Reg. EU 2017/2226). Source: Regulation (EU) 2017/2226.

7. Importing food banned by EU and Morocco

Entering EU from Morocco: meat, milk, fresh cheese, unpackaged honey = prohibited (EU Animal Health Regulation). Entering Morocco from EU: dairy products in large quantities, seeds, live plants = ONSSA inspection. Tip: stick to industrially packaged dry products.

8. Traveling with medication without prescription

Mistake: transporting medication boxes without prescription or notice. Moroccan rule: only medication for personal use is allowed, accompanied by the medical prescription. Penalty: confiscation + customs report (case of opioids, benzodiazepines). Tip: keep original boxes + translated prescription if possible.

9. Forgetting the AT proxy to drive a relative''s car

Mistake: driving in Morocco a car under TA (Temporary Admission) in a relative''s name without proxy. ADII rule: the car under TA can only be driven by the holder or a close family member with a legalized proxy. Solution: have the AT proxy drafted by an adoul or notary on the Morocco side before traveling. Non-legalized proxy accepted (since Circular 6568/311 of May 30, 2024) if signed by the holder.

10. Not booking the return early enough

Mistake: booking the late August return in July. 2026 reality: 100 % occupancy rate on long-distance ferries (Sète, Genoa) between August 25 and September 5. Booking recommended from March. Tip: if flexible, leave before August 20 or after September 8 = -30 % on the ticket price.
