Maritime borders: Spanish Senate revives issue with Rabat
The Spanish Senate requires a three-month report on maritime delimitation with Morocco, urging renewed talks with Rabat involving the Canaries and protecting sovereign rights.
Frontières maritimes : le Sénat espagnol relance le dossier avec Rabat
The Spanish Senate demands that the government produce a report within three months on maritime delimitation with Morocco. A motion adopted this Thursday also calls for the resumption of talks with Rabat, involving the Canary Islands government.
The text was approved on 1 October by the General Committee of the Autonomous Communities, with the support of the PP and the PNV. The PSOE voted against this non‑legislative initiative put forward by Javier Armas, senator for the Agrupación Herreña Independiente, according to Europa Press.
Beyond this assessment, the motion calls for the reactivation of the working group between Madrid and Rabat, with representation from the regional government. It asks that Spain’s sovereign rights over Canarian waters be preserved, without prejudging the final status of Western Sahara and in compliance with UN resolutions.
Finally, the text calls for the separation of maritime delimitation from other bilateral issues, notably migration cooperation and border control. It also rejects unilateral acts contrary to Spanish sovereign rights or to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
