Morocco targets 52% renewable electricity capacity by 2030. In 2026, the solar and wind sector offers MRE genuine entry points, from residential projects to commercial-scale investments.

Morocco aims to reach 52% of installed electricity capacity from renewable sources by 2030. In 2026, the country sits at around 40% and is maintaining a strong investment pace in solar, wind and hydro. For MRE investors, this sector combines regulatory visibility, public support and growing demand.

State of the sector in 2026

MASEN (Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy) manages major national projects. The Noor solar complex in Ouarzazate, with installed capacity exceeding 580 MW, remains one of the world's largest concentrated solar power plants. Extensions are under way.

The Tarfaya wind farm (300 MW) and the Jbel Khalladi complex (120 MW) contribute to a total wind portfolio exceeding 1,500 MW. Hydropower remains significant via major dams, though drought cycles affect volumes.

Opportunities for MRE

Large-scale MASEN projects remain reserved for major industrialists. But the residential and commercial market is accessible.

Installing solar panels on a Moroccan secondary residence represents an investment recouped in 5 to 7 years, with a direct reduction in electricity bills. In certain zones, ONEE allows surplus injection into the grid with a tariff compensation mechanism.

For MRE with industrial or agricultural projects in Morocco, off-grid solar power can significantly reduce energy costs, particularly in peri-urban or rural areas with limited grid coverage.

Moroccan SMEs specialising in solar installation are looking for financing and technical partners. This is a segment where an MRE with equity can take a position without going through MASEN.

What to verify before investing

Grid injection conditions vary by region and installed capacity. The regulatory framework is evolving. Before any investment, a consultation with a MASEN-accredited engineering firm is recommended.

Returns depend on the site's solar irradiation, local installation costs and the current tariff. Southern regions (Ouarzazate, Laayoune) and the Souss Valley have the highest solar yields.
