Neobank and traditional bank: what changes for MRE in 2026
© LesMRE

Attijariwafa bank launched Simple, presented as Morocco's first neobank, while Banque Populaire strengthens its transfer tools for Moroccans abroad. Free Go plan, account aggregation, Bladi transfers from Chaabi Connect: here is what these changes mean for managing a Moroccan account from abroad in 2026.

In short

Morocco's banking landscape is moving fast. Attijariwafa bank launched Simple, presented as the Kingdom's first neobank, while Banque Populaire strengthens its transfer tools for Moroccans abroad. For an MRE, the real question is not the bank's name, but what it changes for managing a Moroccan account from abroad. Key facts first:

  • Simple is a 100% mobile super-app (account, payment, savings, investment), launched on May 25, 2026, on iOS and Android.
  • Freemium model, 4 plans: Go at MAD 0/month, Plus MAD 19, Prime MAD 59, Metal MAD 159. You can move up or down anytime.
  • For MRE, Simple announces account aggregation: viewing several accounts (Europe and Morocco) in one app.
  • At Banque Populaire, the transfer to Morocco Bladi Vir can now be initiated directly from the Chaabi Connect app.
  • The account-to-account transfer Bladi Compte stays free up to EUR 1,000 per operation in Ordinary mode (funds in 3 business days). Express mode makes the money available the next day.
  • Two reflexes before switching: check that the app works from your country of residence, and compare the real cost over a full year with your current MRE offer.

Simple, Attijariwafa bank's neobank

On May 25, 2026, Attijariwafa bank unveiled Simple in Casablanca, ten years after L'bankalik and its community of around one million clients. This is not a simple facelift of the old app. It is a new platform designed as a super-app: account, payment, savings, investment and everyday services in a single mobile interface.

The model is freemium, with four plans and the ability to change tier anytime.

PlanMonthly fee
GoMAD 0/month
PlusMAD 19/month
PrimeMAD 59/month
MetalMAD 159/month

The onboarding is reversed compared with a classic bank. You collect the card first (at an Attijariwafa bank branch, at Wafacash, in a retailer like Marjane, via Glovo or home delivery), then finalize the account in the app in a few minutes, with an ID document and a selfie. The group claims more than 7,000 physical contact points for cash operations.

On features, Simple introduces Simple Pay (instant payment and transfers between users via QR code, free), Simple One (account from age 12 with parental control), Simple Share for referrals, and themed services such as Simple Trip, Simple Move or Simple Deals.

What Simple changes for an MRE in practice

This is the point that concerns you directly. Attijariwafa bank announced an account aggregation feature designed for Moroccans abroad, meaning the ability to view several accounts in the same app. When you juggle an account in Europe and one in Morocco, this kind of feature genuinely simplifies day-to-day tracking.

The other benefit is the Go plan at MAD 0. Many MRE pay a fee on a dedicated offer without using half the services. For consultation and payment use, a no-entry-fee version already covers the essentials.

Two common-sense caveats before switching.

  • Test the app from your country of residence, not only once you arrive in Morocco. It is the classic trap with Moroccan banking apps: a login or an SMS validation that fails abroad.
  • Compare the Go plan with your current MRE fees, over a full year and including account-keeping fees, not just on the opening promise.

Banque Populaire: transfers get simpler

Banque Populaire remains the historic bank of Moroccans abroad, with its Chaabi Bank subsidiary and physical branches in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. If you prefer human contact and an advisor in your country of residence, it is still a reference.

The useful update comes from the Chaabi Connect app: the transfer to Morocco Bladi Vir can now be initiated directly from mobile, without going to a branch. For reference, the account-to-account transfer Bladi Compte is free up to EUR 1,000 per operation in Ordinary mode, with funds available within three business days. Express mode makes the money available the next day.

The Banque Populaire group was also distinguished in February 2026 at the APIDE Awards, through its payment subsidiary M2T, for its Chaabi Pay and Chaabi Payment solutions. It is a sign that the digital effort continues.

As summer approaches, Banque Populaire also maintains its reception program for Moroccans abroad, in Morocco and abroad. It is the right time to check your access, your card limits and the validity of your contact details before leaving.

Simple or Banque Populaire: which MRE profile

Both sides are going digital, but with different logics.

Your needRather SimpleRather Banque Populaire
100% mobile bank, free to startYes (Go plan)No
Tracking several accounts Europe and MoroccoYes (aggregation)Depends on offer
Advisor reachable in your countryNoYes (Europe branches)
Transfer to Morocco from mobileYes (Simple Pay)Yes (Chaabi Connect, Bladi Vir)

Three reflexes before deciding

  1. Test the app from abroad before migrating anything. Login, code reception, transfers: everything must work from your country.
  2. Compare the real cost over twelve months, account-keeping and card fees included, rather than the fee shown at opening.
  3. Keep at least one accessible physical channel, a branch or representative office, for operations that do not go through online.

The right choice depends less on the bank than on your real usage: transfer frequency, average amount, need for a mortgage, and preference between an app and an advisor. That is the grid to keep in mind when deciding.

Franco-Moroccan succession: how to avoid double taxation

The lack of a Franco-Moroccan inheritance tax treaty risks double taxation. France taxes worldwide estates if the heir or deceased was a French tax resident, while Morocco levies near-zero duties. The French tax credit (Art. 784A CGI) only offsets duties actually paid in Morocco. EU Regulation 650/2012 allows choosing Moroccan law via will. In France, a €100,000 allowance per heir per parent every 15 years applies before progressive rates; lifetime gifts or SCI structures can optimize transfer.
