Online advertising: Around 100 French media demand €1.4B from Meta
A coalition of French media outlets sues Meta in a Paris court over unlawful personal data collection and targeted advertising without consent, alleging the company distorts digital competition and deprives publishers of legitimate ad revenue in the online market.
French media and Meta: the dispute lands before the Paris court
A coalition of 101 French media outlets has launched a collective action before the Paris Economic Activities Court. The filing took place in April 2025. The group includes titles such as Le Figaro, Les Échos, Le Parisien, L’Équipe, Libération, Ouest‑France, as well as TF1 and Radio France.
The core of the dispute concerns targeted advertising. The plaintiffs denounce a massive and unlawful collection of users’ personal data. They argue that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram has not complied with the European data protection regulation applicable since 2018. Targeted ads would have been served without valid consent.
The media’s lawyers contend that these practices have distorted competition. Without them, French publishers would have captured a significantly larger share of digital advertising investment. The argument rests on the direct economic harm linked to the failure to respect the legal framework.
