Royal Air Maroc pays 400 euros after double modification

The airline moved a passenger’s flight from Amsterdam (1 August 2022) twice: first to Maastricht on 14 July, then postponed to 2 August on 27 July. The Dutch court ruled the second change an cancellation and ordered 400 € compensation plus legal costs.

Royal Air Maroc condemned to €400 for a flight changed twice

A passenger was due to fly from Amsterdam on 1 August 2022. On 14 July, Royal Air Maroc informed him that the departure would ultimately be from Maastricht‑Aachen. The situation changed on 27 July: a second email moved the flight to 2 August. For the Dutch court, this second postponement changes the nature of the problem. The first modification respected the 14‑day notice period. The second, announced only five days before the original departure, constitutes a full cancellation in its own right.

The airline tried to justify itself by citing the chaos at Dutch airports that summer: staff shortages, capacity restrictions and displaced flights. The judge does not dispute the existence of these disruptions. However, he points out the lack of explanation of their direct link with the specific cancellation of this flight from Maastricht. Royal Air Maroc also failed to prove that it had done everything possible to maintain the route.

In its judgment of 26 August 2026, the Dutch courts therefore awarded the traveller €400, with interest from 1 August 2022. Added to this are €72.60 in collection costs and €440.47 in legal costs. The final bill rises well beyond the basic compensation.
